About Downtown Reimagined

Downtown Reimagined is a once-in-a-generation infrastructure and streetscape revitalization project that will renew the heart of Downtown Grimsby while preserving the character that makes it unique.

The project combines the replacement of aging underground infrastructure with significant public realm improvements to create a safer, more accessible, and more vibrant downtown for residents, businesses, and visitors. By investing in critical infrastructure today, the Town is laying the foundation for a downtown that will support economic growth, enhance the visitor experience, and serve the community for decades to come.

To help reduce disruption and maintain access to businesses and residents, construction will be completed over two years.

  • Phase 1 (2026): Focuses primarily on underground infrastructure renewal outside the immediate downtown core (e.g., Elm Street, Mountain Street, Christie Street, and Rossmore). This includes replacing old watermains with PVC piping.
  • Phase 2 (2027): Moves the construction directly into the downtown core (Main Street between Christie and Elm) for the remaining underground and streetscape work.

Improvements will include enhanced sidewalks and accessibility features, upgraded lighting and landscaping, street furniture, improved pedestrian connections, and other public realm enhancements designed to create a more welcoming, pedestrian-friendly downtown that supports local businesses and community life.

Throughout construction, the Town remains committed to maintaining access to downtown businesses, providing regular project updates, and working closely with residents, business owners, and community partners to minimize disruption while delivering a stronger downtown for future generations.

PROJECT UPDATES

Downtown Reimagined Project Update – August 14, 2026

Crews are getting closer to Main Street East as work continues to move along Elm Street.

This week, crews are installing the new watermain, sanitary laterals, water service connections, a valve chamber and a new fire hydrant — another step forward in replacing and upgrading critical downtown infrastructure.

Traffic remains open with single-lane operation during working hours. Paid duty police officers and contractor flag persons continue to help manage traffic safely near the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection.

Temporary driveway closures may be required near TD Bank and GBF Plaza as work progresses. Affected businesses and property owners will receive advance notice.

Looking ahead: next week, crews will continue east toward Main Street East, with a focus on watermain and water service installations.

And while construction continues, there’s still plenty happening downtown! Comedy Nights continue every Wednesday in August, Music in the Park runs through August 20, the Construction StoryWalk continues through August 28, Movies in the Park returns August 28, and the Construction Passport runs through September 30.

Week of August 10 Construction Recap

    • Crews made steady progress on Elm Street east of Mountain Street, with the week's work focused on installing the new watermain, completing sanitary lateral connections, installing new water service connections, constructing a water valve chamber, and installing a new fire hydrant as work advanced toward Main Street East.
    • Because that work was close to the Mountain Street and Elm Street intersection, paid duty police officers continued to assist with traffic management to keep motorists and crews safe.
    • Traffic remained open through the zone with single-lane operation during working hours, with contractor flag persons managing alternating traffic to maintain a steady, safe flow of vehicles.
    • Temporary driveway access closures may have been required near the TD Bank and GBF Plaza as watermain installation progressed; affected businesses and property owners received advance notice before any closures.

Another productive week has passed for the Downtown Reimagined Project. Crews have wrapped up watermain and service installation on Elm Street, west of Mountain Street, with only testing, final connections, and restoration left to complete at a later date. The team has since shifted east of Mountain Street, where they're now installing watermain and sanitary laterals as they work toward Main Street East. Because that work sits close to the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection, traffic control and police presence remain in place to keep everyone moving safely through the area until there's enough of a buffer to safely re-activate the traffic lights.

Next week, that installation continues on Elm Street east of Mountain Street, and crews will also complete a section of watermain in the Balsam Lane parking lot.

Another week, another milestone. Crews have wrapped up another productive week on the Downtown Reimagined Project, and are still finishing watermain, sanitary lateral, and hydrant work on Elm Street, between Forty Mile Creek and Mountain Street. Because that work sits so close to the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection, we’ve added extra traffic control and police presence to keep everyone moving safely through the area.

Once work in this section wraps, crews will move east, skipping the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection for now, to start watermain and sanitary work between Mountain Street and Main Street East. A second crew will be joining to help advance the schedule. Crews will be taking a break for the Civic Holiday on Monday, August 3. Construction will resume on Tuesday, August 4. .

Downtown stays open throughout construction: the Construction StoryWalk continues through August 28 and the Construction Passport runs to September 30. Coronation Park keeps the summer going with Music in the Park every Thursday through August 20; Movies in the Park on August 7, 14, and 28; and Comedy Night every Wednesday in August.

THE 60-SECOND RUN DOWN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 3

    Construction

    • Watermain, sanitary lateral, and hydrant work continues on Elm Street between Forty Mile Creek and Mountain Street.
    • Rain and rocky ground have slowed progress but this stage is expected to wrap by the end of next week.
    • Once complete, crews will move east, skipping the Elm Street/Mountain Street intersection for now, to begin watermain and sanitary work between Mountain Street and Main Street East.
    • A second crew is joining to help advance the schedule – one installing watermain and the other installing services.

    Traffic Plan

    • Elm Street remains open to alternating one-way traffic during daytime construction hours.
    • Traffic control personnel, plus additional police presence near the Elm/Mountain intersection, are on site.
    • Expect brief, intermittent delays as equipment moves through the work area.
    • No construction and no detours on the Civic Holiday, Monday, August 3. Work resumes Tuesday, August 4.

    Downtown Highlights

    • Construction StoryWalk: Continues until August 28. Take a stroll through downtown and enjoy a story along the construction route.
    • Construction Passport: Running until September 30. Shop, collect stamps, and earn chances to win great prizes while supporting local businesses.
    • Comedy Nights: New this month! Every Wednesday in August at 7:00 p.m. at Coronation Park.
    • Music in the Park: A new band plays at Coronation Park every Thursday through August 20.
    • Movies in the Park: Family-friendly screenings return to Coronation Park August 7, 14, and 28

Once that work is finished, they will move east, skipping the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection, to begin watermain and sanitary work between Mountain Street and Main Street East.

A second crew joins this week to help advance the schedule, one crew installing watermain, the other installing sanitary services.

Hosted by David Green with comics Paul Haywood, Evan Carter, Ronnie Edwards, and Larry Smith.

Admission is free and the show is family friendly. In case of rain, the venue moves indoors to Station One Coffee House.

    A LOOK BACK

Week of July 27 Construction Recap

Crews continued watermain installation on Elm Street between Forty Mile Creek and Mountain Street, with sanitary lateral and hydrant replacements flagged during the Town's annual CCTV inspection also underway in this section. Rain and rocky ground conditions, which slowed the pace the week before, pushed this phase later than planned. Because the work zone runs close to the Elm/Mountain intersection, extra traffic control and police presence supported safe movement through the area all week.

    A LOOK AHEAD

Week of August 3 – Elm Street (Mountain Street to Main Street East)

To start the week, crews will complete the remaining watermain and sanitary lateral work on Elm Street, west of Mountain Street. Once that work is finished, they will move east, skipping the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection, to begin watermain and sanitary work between Mountain Street and Main Street East.

A second crew joins this week to help advance the schedule, one crew installing watermain, the other installing sanitary services.

No construction will take place Monday, August 3 for the Civic Holiday. Work resumes Tuesday, August 4.

Comedy Nights - every Wednesday in August starting August 5

A new downtown series kicks off this month! Led by the Downtown Grimsby BIA in partnership with the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Grimsby and the Downtown Reimagined Project, Comedy Nights returns every Wednesday in August at 7:00 p.m. at Coronation Park, 77 Main St W.

Another productive week for the Downtown Reimagined Project as watermain and service work kept moving along on Elm Street, west of Forty Mile Creek. That stretch of work is on track to wrap up by the end of the week, despite progress being a little slower this week due to extreme heat and air quality, as well as poor trench conditions.

Next week, the crew will work on watermain installation East of the creek crossing to Mountain Street, and replace 2 sanitary services in the same area.

Downtown Grimsby remains open and vibrant, with the Construction Passport program officially launched this week until September 30 and the Construction StoryWalk running until August 28.

THE 60-SECOND RUN DOWN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

    Construction

    • Right now: Watermain and service installation continues on Elm Street, west of Forty Mile Creek. Heat, wildfire smoke advisories, and heavy rock in the trenches have slowed the pace, but crews still expect this section to be done by the end of the week.
    • Week of July 20: Watermain installation begins between Forty Mile Creek and Mountain Street, alongside the replacement of two sanitary services identified during the Town's annual sewer camera (CCTV) inspection.

    Events

    • July 13 to Sept 30: Construction Passport rewards shoppers for supporting downtown businesses during construction.
    • Until Aug 28: The Construction StoryWalk continues along the downtown route.

Big week for the Downtown Reimagined project. Directional drilling beneath the Forty Mile Creek was completed successfully as of Wednesday morning, marking one of the most technically complex milestones of Phase 1. Crews have already transitioned to open cut watermain installation on Elm Street between the creek and Gibson Street.

The contractor's site compound at Main Street East and Elm Street is taking shape, with trailers being set up and power being connected to the site. Next week, crews will continue watermain installation on Elm Street between Gibson Street and Mountain Street, while monitoring well decommissioning begins on Main Street.

You will also begin seeing project and "Open for Business" signage throughout the work zones.

The Construction Passport launches on July 13. We encourage residents and visitors to explore local businesses. Also, the Construction StoryWalk runs through August 28, offering families another opportunity to enjoy downtown throughout the summer.

    Full details below.

    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

    Construction:

    • Now Underway: Open cut watermain work becomes visible on Elm Street between Gibson and Mountain, and the contractor's site compound is set up at Main Street East and Elm.
    • Week of July 13: Watermain installation continues between Gibson Street and Mountain Street, followed by service installations in that section by the same crew.
    • Monitoring wells are decommissioned, with a tentative half-day single-lane closure on Main Street near Patton (Tuesday). No additional traffic impact expected at the Elm Street location.

    Events:

    • July 13: The Construction Passport launches, running through September 30.
    • Now until August 28: The Construction StoryWalk continues along the downtown route.

    A LOOK BACK

Staging & Construction Update – Week of July 6

Here's what's been underway this week:

    • As of Wednesday morning, Alfred Beam Construction's subcontractor, NPL, mobilized on site and completed directional drilling beneath the Forty Mile Creek, with the new watermain pipe now installed beneath the creek bed.
    • With trenchless installation complete, a separate construction crew has mobilized to begin open cut watermain installation on Elm Street, working from the creek west toward Gibson Street.
    • The watermain alignment in this section has shifted closer to centerline due to existing utility locations, meaning only one lane of traffic is being maintained through the work zone.
    • Project and “Open for Business” signage is now up around the work zone.
    • The contractor is setting up trailers and running power to the site compound taking shape at Main Street East and Elm.
    • Construction signage and traffic control remains in place in and around the work zone.

    Construction StoryWalk

The Construction StoryWalk is in full swing and runs through August 28. Led by the Downtown Grimsby BIA, in partnership with the Town of Grimsby and the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, the Construction StoryWalk is a free, self-guided route through participating downtown businesses.

Follow along the pages of Mighty, Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld, an internationally bestselling children's book about a hardworking crew of construction vehicles tackling a big job together.

Downtown is open all summer long and worth visiting even with the Downtown Reimagined construction underway.

    Pre-Construction Surveys Concluded

dBA Services Inc., the third-party consultant retained by the contractor on behalf of the Town, is completing the final pre-construction surveys for properties within the project area. Representatives have now contacted all eligible property owners within the construction limits, and no additional surveys will be scheduled after this final round.

    A LOOK AHEAD

Week of July 13 – Open Cut Watermain, Site Compound

The week of July 13 is when construction becomes most visible on Elm Street. With open cut watermain work currently underway between Gibson Street and Mountain Street, and the contractor's staging area established at the corner of Main Street East and Elm Street, this gives the project team a home on-site for the duration of the work ahead of next week.

Monitoring wells along the project route will be decommissioned next week. The Elm Street location won't add any further traffic impact, but the Main Street location near Patton will require a single lane closure for approximately half a day, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday. We'll share the exact timing as it's confirmed.

    Construction Process:

    • A trench is excavated within the roadway running parallel to the road. The trench will allow the new PVC watermain pipe to be installed.
    • Separate trenches will be excavated perpendicular to the watermain, which will allow new water service pipes to be installed, to each property.
    • The new watermain will be connected to the new pipe installed under the Forty Mile Creek.
    • The watermain will be backfilled and compacted in layers as pipe is installed, then tested before the new watermain is connected to the active system. The testing comes later in the process.

    What to Expect:

    • Mechanical compaction equipment may cause small, noticeable vibrations through the ground.
    • Trenches are initially restored with stone; full asphalt paving follows once all watermain and services are installed.

    Traffic:

    • Construction will take place during daytime hours.

    • Elm Street will remain open to alternating two-way traffic with traffic control persons in place.
    • Main Street West will be open to two-way traffic with lane adjustments in place.
    • Moving equipment may cause intermittent disruptions to traffic flow.
    • No detour routes are required during these stages.

    15. Charlie's Barber Shop, 23 Main St W

    A LOOK AHEAD

    Ongoing Pre-Construction Surveys

Property owners along the construction route are encouraged to book a free pre-condition survey with dBA Services Inc., a third-party consultant retained by the contractor on behalf of the Town, as long as construction has not yet started in the property’s specific area.

A pre-condition survey is a photographic inspection of your property's existing condition before construction begins, providing a documented baseline should any questions arise after the work is completed.

To book, call or text (905) 383-9491, toll-free (833) 212-4858, or email pcs@dbaservices.ca. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participation is voluntary, but all eligible property owners are encouraged to take advantage of this free service.

For more information, visit DowntownGrimsby.com or follow @DowntownGrimsby on social media.

Week of July 6 - Trenchless Watermain Installation Begins

The contractor team, Alfred Beam Excavating Ltd., along with their subcontractor, NPL, will be mobilizing on site to begin the trenchless watermain installation under the Forty Mile Creek, using a drilling machine to create a tunnel and pull the new pipe through to the other side. No excavation of the creek bed is required through this process.

The pace of any additional open cut trenching depends on how much support the contractor needs as they get set up on site.

    Traffic updates remain unchanged:

    • Construction takes place during daytime hours only.
    • Elm Street remains open to two-way traffic throughout the watermain installation.
    • Moving equipment may cause some intermittent disruptions to traffic flow.
    • No detour routes are required at this stage.

Week of July 13 - Open Cut Watermain & Site Set Up

The week of July 13 is when construction becomes most visible on Elm Street. Open cut watermain work begins between Gibson Street and Mountain Street.

At the same time, the contractor compound gets established at the corner of Main Street East and Elm, giving the project team a permanent on-site base for the duration of the work.

    Construction Process

Crews will install new watermain and water services along Elm Street between Mountain Street and Gibson Street, starting near Gibson and working east toward Mountain. Here's what that process looks like:

    • A trench is excavated parallel to the road for installation of new PVC watermain pipe. Water service pipes are then installed perpendicular to the main, running to a new shutoff (curb stop) at each property line.
    • The new watermain will be connected on both sides to the pipe previously installed under the Forty Mile Creek.
    • As pipe is installed, trenches are backfilled and compacted in layers until level with the existing road surface.
    • Once installation is complete, the pipe is cleaned and bacteria-tested. After clean results are confirmed, the new watermain is connected to the existing system and services are transferred over.

Click here for the full plan

    What to Expect

    • Mechanical compaction equipment is used to prevent ground settling. You may feel small vibrations through the ground during this work.
    • Trenches will initially be restored with stone at the surface. Full asphalt paving follows once all watermain and services are installed. Grassed areas are typically restored at the end of the project.
    • The new watermain will not be connected to the active drinking water system until it has been cleaned and tested.

    Traffic

    • Construction will take place during daytime hours.
    • Elm Street will remain open to two-way traffic during watermain installation. During water service installations, the road may be temporarily narrowed to one lane with traffic control in place.
    • Moving equipment may cause intermittent disruptions to traffic flow.
    • No detour routes are required at this stage.

    Groundbreaking Ceremony – June 22

Monday, June 22 was a day worth celebrating. The Town of Grimsby held the official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Downtown Reimagined project, and it was an important town moment that brought together residents, businesses, Town staff, and project partners who have worked side by side to bring this vision to life.

Joined by Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure, Todd McCarthy; MPP for Niagara West, Sam Oosterhoff; Mayor Jeff Jordan and a message from the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Gregor Roberston; the groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of real, tangible improvements to the heart of Grimsby - improvements that will benefit residents, visitors, and businesses for generations to come.

    A LOOK AHEAD

    Ongoing Pre-Condition Surveys

We want to make sure every property owner near the construction zones has had the chance to book their free pre-condition survey. dBA Services Inc., a third-party consultant hired by the contractor, is conducting these surveys on behalf of the Town – and they are available to you at no cost.

What is a pre-condition survey? It's a photographic inspection of your property's existing condition, completed before construction begins. It's designed to protect you if any questions arise about property conditions after work is done. The survey provides a clear, documented baseline.

To book, call or text (905) 383-9491, toll free (833) 212-4858, or email pcs@dbaservices.ca (office is open Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm). Participation is voluntary, but we strongly encourage everyone in the survey area to take advantage of this free service.

June 25 – Music on the Forty

Summer in downtown Grimsby wouldn't be complete without Music on the Forty, and the 2026 season is wrapping up in style. The final show of the season takes place this Thursday, June 25, from 6:00-8:00 p.m in Coronation Park, with headliner Groove Miller closing out what's been a fantastic run of live music in our downtown.

Admission is free, and the whole community is welcome. The event is weather dependent – if it needs to be cancelled, an announcement will go out via @DowntownGrimsby on social media one hour before showtime. So keep an eye on your feed, and plan to be there!

June 25 - October 8 – Grimsby Farmers' Market Moves to a New Home

As downtown Grimsby undergoes Phase 1 construction this summer, the Grimsby Farmers' Market is moving to a new location. Starting Thursday, June 25, the market will be held at the newly-renovated Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre at 162 Livingston Avenue, running through October 8.

Enjoy the market you know and love, just in a new spot. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the market this Thursday!

    July 2 – Construction StoryWalk

Starting July 2, the Downtown Grimsby BIA is launching a Construction-themed StoryWalk that runs all the way until August 28. This creative, family-friendly event will be a way to explore downtown while construction is underway.

This year's featured story is Mighty, Mighty Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker, a children's book about a hardworking team of construction vehicles tackling a big job together. Pages are placed along a walking route through 16 participating downtown businesses – from Main St. West to Elm St. – so families can read the story together while discovering everything the neighbourhood has to offer.

It's the perfect excuse to take a stroll, pop into local shops, grab a bite on a patio, and make a day of your visit downtown. The StoryWalk is a wonderful reminder that construction is a sign of growth and that our downtown is very much alive and open throughout.

Learn more and follow along the route at downtowngrimsby.com

Throughout every phase of construction, downtown Grimsby is open for business. In partnership with the Grimsby Downtown BIA and Chamber of Commerce, we remain committed to maintaining access to local shops, restaurants, and services throughout the project.

We encourage residents and visitors to continue supporting downtown businesses – your patronage truly makes a difference.

Week of July 6 – Construction Begins on Elm Street - Construction Process

A slight adjustment to the construction starting location. Beginning the week of July 6, the contractor will begin installing a new watermain pipe on Elm St. to cross under the Forty Mile Creek. The following process will be used:

    • The pipe will be installed using trenchless technology to avoid impacting the water course.

    • The pipe will be assembled above ground and fed into a tunnel created by the drilling machine and pulled through to the other side of the creek.

    • Refer to the CONSTRUCTION PROCESS graphic below for further information.

Click here for the full plan

    Traffic Considerations

    • Construction takes place during daytime hours only.

    • Elm Street remains open to traffic in both directions throughout the watermain installation.

    • Moving construction equipment may cause some intermittent disruptions in traffic flow.

    • Refer to the TRAFFIC PLAN graphic below for additional traffic considerations in the work area.

The Town of Grimsby Breaks Ground on Downtown Reimagined, Backed by $1.9M Joint Federal and Provincial Investment

Phase 1 replaces aging watermains and renews the underground water infrastructure at the heart of Grimsby's downtown.

GRIMSBY, ON — June 22, 2026 — The Town of Grimsby officially marked the beginning of Phase 1 of Downtown Reimagined today as work commences on a critical water infrastructure renewal project, supported by a $1.9 million investment from the federal and provincial governments through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The Government of Canada provided $1.05 million for the project and the Government of Ontario provided nearly $875,000.

Phase 1 is scheduled to start the week of June 22 and will continue until the end of October 2026. During this period, construction activity will be carefully phased to help maintain access, reduce disruption and support business continuity. Downtown Grimsby will remain open throughout construction. Residents and visitors are encouraged to continue shopping, dining and supporting local businesses.

The funding is critical to the Town’s ability to replace aging underground water systems and deliver the long-term infrastructure improvements that Grimsby needs. Investing public dollars in essential water infrastructure is an investment in public health, community safety and long-term economic vitality.

Held at Coronation Park, the groundbreaking ceremony celebrated this significant federal-provincial investment alongside Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure Todd McCarthy and Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff. The event also brought together Mayor Jeff Jordan, Members of Council, Town Staff, project partners and business leaders from the downtown community.

Downtown Reimagined represents a generational investment in the essential infrastructure that Grimsby residents and businesses rely on every day. Phase 1 centres on replacing deteriorating cast-iron watermains, some dating back to the 1950s, along with upgrades to stormwater and sanitary systems. By replacing these aging systems now, the Town is protecting water quality, improving public health, reducing the risk of watermain breaks and building the resilient foundation the downtown needs for decades ahead.

“Today marks an important milestone for Grimsby,” said Mayor Jeff Jordan. “The investment we are announcing today is about completing essential water infrastructure work that residents and businesses depend on. We are grateful to our federal and provincial partners for recognizing the importance of investing in Grimsby’s water systems and long-term community resilience. This infrastructure work is the critical first step that will enable us to reimagine what our downtown can become.”

“The replacement of aging infrastructure is vital to ensuring the safety of Canadians,” said the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure responsible for Pacific Development Canada. “Through this investment, the Government of Canada is proud to support the Town of Grimsby’s renewal of essential water infrastructure, ensuring that the downtown area can continue to serve residents, businesses and visitors for decades to come.”

"Replacing aging water infrastructure in downtown Grimsby means cleaner water, more reliable service and a stronger foundation for everything that comes next," said Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure. "Investments like this one are how we build stronger, more resilient communities, part of our $236 billion capital plan to build and protect Ontario."

"Today is a new chapter for Grimsby as we mark the beginning of the Downtown Reimagined Project," said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West. "Through the province's funding partnership with the federal government and the Town of Grimsby, which includes upgrades to Grimsby's critical water infrastructure, we look forward to creating a new Main Street experience that will attract residents and visitors alike to our growing region."

The Town has worked closely with the Downtown Grimsby BIA, the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and project partners, including CIMA+, Alfred Beam Excavating Ltd. and Gestalt Communications, to help shape the construction approach and communications plan. Throughout Phase 1, the Town will provide regular project updates, construction notices, access information and business-support messaging to help residents, businesses and visitors plan ahead.

Phase 1 lays the groundwork for Phase 2, which will bring improved accessibility, safer and more walkable streets, enhanced public spaces, landscaping, lighting and streetscape enhancements to Main Street once the critical infrastructure is in place.

Residents, businesses and visitors can stay informed by visiting the Downtown Reimagined project page on Let’s Talk Grimsby and following the Town’s communication channels for regular updates, along with the Downtown Reimagined social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.

Town Council Update – June 15

On June 15, the project team presented a formal update to the Grimsby Town Council, confirming that everything is in place for a well-coordinated and well-communicated construction period. The update highlighted three key areas:

    • Project readiness: Construction mobilization is set to begin the week of June 22.

    • Communications strategy: The refreshed Downtown Reimagined brand is live, and our dedicated Facebook and Instagram channels (@downtownreimagined) are active and building momentum.

    • Stakeholder alignment: The Downtown Grimsby BIA and the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce are coordinated and engaged, ensuring a consistent and supportive message to the business community throughout construction.

This alignment across Town leadership, communications, and business partners sets a strong foundation for the months ahead.

The event was well attended and provided a fun, interactive way for the community to engage with the project.

    A LOOK AHEAD

    June 23 – Ongoing Pre-Condition Surveys

Before construction begins, dBA Services Inc., a third-party consultant hired by the contractor, will conduct free pre-condition surveys of properties in the work area. This is a photographic inspection that documents your property's existing condition and protects you if any damage claim arises later.

    Current and upcoming survey areas:

    • Elm Street – between Main St. West and Main St. East

    • Main Street – between Patton St., Christie St., Elm St., and Robinson St. N

    • Mountain St. / Christie St. – between Elm St. and Elizabeth St.

    • Rossmore Avenue – between 4 Rossmore Ave. and Main St. East

Booking date: Tuesday, June 23 – spots fill fast!

If you receive a notice, it means the survey team will be in your area soon. Exterior-only inspections don't require you to be present – just your permission. There is no cost to participate. Participation is voluntary but encouraged, and the surveys are a standard part of the construction process.

Week of June 22 – Changes to Parking on Robinson Street North

Temporary changes to on-street parking restrictions on Robinson Street North are being implemented to support traffic flow during construction:

    • New restrictions are in effect on the east side of Robinson St N, between Main St E and John St.

    • Existing parking on the west side of Robinson St N remains unchanged.

These restrictions support traffic flow on Robinson St N and John St, which are expected to see increased volumes as construction gets underway.

Week of June 22 – Project Staging Plan

The contractor, Alfred Beam Excavating Ltd., will begin mobilizing equipment in preparation for construction.

Crews will begin bringing equipment and materials to the area, setting up the project staging area and site office, and preparing the site for upcoming work. You’ll also start to see project signage going up around downtown as construction gets underway.

Click here for the full plan

Week of June 22 – Sequence of Construction

Over the last few weeks, the project team has been working closely with Alfred Beam Excavating Ltd. to refine the construction schedule, including the order in which work will occur street by street.

A few things to keep in mind as you review the staging plan:

    • The schedule may shift. Construction timelines can be affected by weather, underground conditions, and other factors. If significant changes occur, we’ll communicate updates as quickly as possible.

    • The graphic below shows the main sequence of underground work. Activities like watermain testing, connections, and restoration will occur at different stages and are not captured in this overview.

    • Some phases will require temporary road closures. Where closures are planned, advance notice will be provided along with detour route information through our regular weekly updates.

    • Our goal is to include specific details about upcoming work (exact locations, type of work, and timing) in our updates so you always know what’s coming next.

This week marks a pivotal moment for the Downtown Reimagined project as we prepare to move from planning into active construction, with key milestones that bring us closer to a vibrant, accessible, and connected downtown.

    WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

    • June 19 & 23: Ongoing Pre-Condition Surveys

    • Week of June 22: Changes to Parking on Robinson Street North & Project Staging Plan

    • Week of July 6: Construction Begins on Elm Street

    A LOOK BACK

Meet the Machines at the Grimsby Farmer’s Market - June 18

On June 18, the Downtown Reimagined project team, in partnership with the Downtown Grimsby BIA and Grimsby Chamber of Commerce hosted Meet the Machines at the Grimsby Farmers' Market.

Residents and visitors had the opportunity to explore construction equipment, learn more about the Downtown Reimagined project, and speak directly with the project team about the work underway in the downtown core.

To book, call or text (905) 383-9491, toll free (833) 212-4858, or email pcs@dbaservices.ca (office is open Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm).

Throughout every phase of construction, downtown Grimsby is open for business. We are committed to maintaining access to local shops, restaurants, and services throughout the project.

We encourage residents and visitors to continue supporting downtown businesses – your patronage makes a difference.

Week of July 6 – Construction Begins on Elm Street

The moment we’ve been working towards is almost here. Active construction is set to begin the week of July 6, starting on Elm Street, near the intersection with Gibson Street.

The contractor will be working easterly towards Main Street East over a 2-3 week period. Stay tuned for additional details about the work on Elm Street on our next update.
