Downtown Reimagined Project Update – July 23, 2026
Another week of progress is underway on the Downtown Reimagined project, with crews continuing watermain installation on Elm Street between Forty Mile Creek and Mountain Street. In the same area, sanitary service connections identified during the Town's annual inspection are also being replaced.
Heavy rain earlier this week and challenging rock conditions have slowed progress slightly, so this work is expected to continue into next week. Once complete, crews will move east, skipping the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection for now, and begin watermain installation between Mountain Street and Main Street.
Downtown Grimsby remains open throughout construction, with the Construction Passport program running until September 30 and the Construction StoryWalk continuing until August 28.

A LOOK AHEAD
Week of July 27 – Elm Street (Mountain Street to Main Street)
To start the week, crews will complete watermain installation on Elm Street west of Mountain Street. Once that work is finished, they will move east - skipping the Elm Street and Mountain Street intersection - to begin watermain installation between Mountain Street and Main Street.
At the same time, sanitary service connections identified during the Town's annual CCTV inspection will be replaced on Elm Street (both west and east of Mountain Street) within this work area.
Construction Process
A trench is excavated within the roadway to install the new PVC watermain.
Separate service trenches connect the new watermain to individual properties.
Flagged sanitary laterals are excavated and replaced within the same work area.
Once installed, the pipe is backfilled, compacted in layers, tested, and prepared for connection to the active water system.
What to Expect
Mechanical compaction equipment may create small, noticeable ground vibrations.
Trenches will be temporarily restored with stone before final asphalt paving is completed once all underground work is finished.
Traffic
Construction takes place during daytime working hours.
Elm Street will remain open to one-lane traffic with traffic control personnel directing vehicles.
Short, intermittent delays may occur as equipment moves through the work zone.
No detours are required at this stage.
See traffic plan graphic below.

A LOOK BACK
July 20 Construction Recap
Crews made steady progress this week on watermain installation between Forty Mile Creek and Mountain Street, as outlined in last week's update. Two sewer service connections identified during the Town's annual sewer inspections were also replaced in this section. Although heavy rainfall on Tuesday and challenging rocky ground conditions affected the pace of work, this phase is expected to continue into next week.
