Big things are coming to Grimsby!

Background

In 2019, a citizen-driven Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan identified the need to improve opportunities for community recreation and access to indoor facility space in Grimsby. To achieve this, one of the top recommendations was to work towards a multi-use recreation facility on the Peach King Centre Grounds.

In late August 2019, federal and provincial funding opportunities were announced and Council approved an expedited preparation of a concept plan for a Peach King Centre Expansion. In 2021, the project was selected for approval through the Ontario Government's Strategic Priorities Infrastructure Fund (SPIF), with the province contributing a grant of $16 million towards the total project cost.

Moving from the original concept in 2019 to 2023, there has been an unprecedented increase in both the cost of construction and the overall local demand for recreation space. In response to these two pressures, Council has approved an updated project budget of $36.7 Million that includes expanded project components such as a double gymnasium, fitness studio, expanded lobbies, and select green building initiatives. The comprehensive list of project components is detailed below.

Project Components

The proposed project includes a mix of renovation and expansion items for the existing Peach King Centre. The two ice pads at the Peach King Centre will remain with the following items planned for the project.

  • A double gymnasium (dividable)
  • A second-floor indoor walking track (above gymnasium)
  • Multi-use community rooms
  • Fitness centre
  • Fitness studio
  • Youth Centre
  • Reflection Room
  • Concession
  • West Pad Dressing Room improvements
  • Parking improvements

Town Council has progressed a major milestone in the Peach King Centre (PKC) Expansion and Renovation with the approval of the project’s schematic design. This key advancement sets the blueprint for the site and building, marking an exciting step forward as a visual representation of what is to come for this highly anticipated project.

The design reflects the culmination of months of development and refinement to maximize the functionality, user experience, and value for the residents of Grimsby. Not only will the new facility provide enhanced indoor amenities for recreation, the exterior site will be reimagined to enhance green space, walking paths, and improve pedestrian access and enjoyment.

“This milestone marks a critical step forward in the PKC Expansion and Renovation and reflects Town Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the well-being of our community,” said Mayor Jeff Jordan. “I look forward to seeing the project take shape to provide Grimsby residents with a true community hub that is welcoming and inclusive to all.”

The approved schematic design includes several key features that will transform the PKC into a state-of-the-art community facility:

    • New indoor sport and recreation space: Featuring a double gymnasium, walking track, fitness centre and fitness studio.
    • New and enhanced community spaces: Attractive lobby and passive spaces, multi-purpose rooms, youth area and reflection room.
    • Enhanced green spaces: Redevelopment of the PKC and Town Hall site to expand access to green space through walking trails and parking reconfigurations.
    • Renovations and Accessibility Improvements: Investments in west pad change rooms and improved indoor and outdoor site accessibility.

The PKC Expansion and Renovation was initiated following the 2019 Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan that outlined the growing needs for community recreation space in Grimsby. With over $16 million in support from the Province of Ontario, this $36 million project is a landmark investment by the Town of Grimsby to support community health and wellness.

Construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2024 with a target completion date of Summer 2025. More information about the project, including designs, renderings, and a resident survey are available now @ www.grimsby.ca/pkcexpansion
