When will the STR licensing program be implemented?
Staff are currently researching and investigating the possibilities of implementing a STR licensing program and By-law. The findings are intended to be presented in Q3 of 2024 and Council will provide direction regarding next steps. It is anticipated that if Council approves a licensing program, it would be implemented in 2025.
What is a short term rental?
Short Term Rental: means a rental operated out of an entire Dwelling Unit, including related lands and buildings, that provides rental accommodations for a period not exceeding 28 consecutive days.
What is the definition of a Bed and Breakfast?
Bed and Breakfast: wherein the use of a single detached dwelling for the rental of Guest Room(s) or bed(s) to the travelling public for overnight accommodation on a period not exceeding 28 consecutive days, with a meal provided to guests only, where the Owner or long-term Tenant is present and readily available while guests are in attendance.
Where are short term rentals currently permitted in Grimsby?
Right now, residents can only use their homes as a Bed & Breakfasts.
Are sites like Airbnb and VRBO considered short term rentals?
A short-term rental is an actual property you rent out for short stays. Third party advertising websites like Airbnb, VRBO, Booking.com, etc. connects short term rental properties with potential guests. Presently, only Bed and Breakfasts are permitted in Grimsby.
Would a Short Term Rental licensing program impact student rentals?
No, a short term rental licensing program would only apply to temporary stays shorter than 28 consecutive days.
Can I rent out my condo as a short term rental?
No, currently the Zoning By-law does not allow for this. Only Bed & Breakfasts are permitted within the Town of Grimsby.
Would my tenant be able to operate a bed and breakfast?
Currently, yes they can, as long as they have permission from the property owner and it was the tenant's primary address.
