Join us in celebrating Grimsby's centennial year throughout 2022! Make sure to follow this page to keep up to date!

Neutrals First Peoples inhabited the Grimsby area until the 1650s. Then, in 1770, Loyalist settlers arrived, referring to the area as "The Forty" after the Forty Mile Creek. In 1876, "The Forty" was first incorporated as "The Village of Grimsby." However, the Town of Grimsby was not officially formed until 1922, therefore making 2022 Grimsby's centennial year.

To celebrate the history and legacy of Grimsby, staff are facilitating various projects, events, and service enhancements to commemorate this milestone. Celebrating a centennial year is a great accomplishment that requires proactive planning and organization.

Grimsby Centennial Celebrations will occur throughout the 2022 year, and they will be be carried out with the following objectives:

  • Commemorating our history
  • Celebrating our legacy and future
  • Connecting with residents and visitors

Commemorating our history

Grimsby's centennial year is an opportune time to reflect on our community's rich heritage and culture. Building on the existing network of historical plaques, celebrating heritage through local art, and providing platforms for sharing local history will enable a solid connection to Grimsby's storied past.

Celebrating our Legacy and Future

Throughout COVID-19, many local special events and celebrations have been on hold or undergone significant modification. In 2022, Grimsby will host several new events alongside the return to traditional special event offerings to recognize Grimsby's centennial.

Connecting with Residents and Visitors

Grimsby’s community is an engaged and active one, who will want to share stories and actively participate in celebrating this centennial year. Connecting with residents and visitors through storytelling, educational opportunities and a strong communication plan will ensure that the 2022 year is one to remember.
